Some children can't be kept on the carpet. They need to run and chase something round.
We'll let them, in an age-appropriate, kind, and fun environment.
Along the way, they'll develop a love for soccer and exercise, make some friends, and develop motor skills.
And, you can enjoy the rest of the day with a child who has less early-morning energy.

Who is a Grasshoppie?
Players eligible for this program are 3-4 years old.
Some exceptions may be made for slightly younger or older players for siblings and in exceptional cases.
Most players older than Grasshoppies age should consider the Crickets (ages 4-7) Academy.

The Grasshoppies Academy is the entry-level program for the very popular Crickets Soccer Academy. Grasshoppies is perfect for young children who have more energy than their parents. Grasshoppies prepares players for easy transitions into the Crickets Soccer Academy, and subsequently, onto competitive SAYSO Gryphons teams. Players from all mid-peninsula cities are welcome to participate without exclusion. Limited to approximately 16 children per session. Established, fixed curriculum covering basic skills and game concepts as well as implicit lessons in listening, respect, and group structure. The age-appropriate curriculum was developed by early childhood experts. The early morning time frame is perfect when the kids have a bundle of energy. Group bonding and player appreciation each week. Age-appropriate teaching methods. Multiple professional, paid, credentialed SAYSO coaches (not parent volunteers) and youth role models provide the instruction. Approximate 1:8 coach:player ratio. A parent is required for each meeting. Location: Beresford Community Center, 2700 Parkview Way, San Mateo. Dates: For fall 2008, there will be three series of 4 classes, starting August 16, September 20, and October 18, 2008. (No meeting on August 31, Labor Day weekend). Cost: $50 per 4-week series, includes professional coach, a Grasshoppies tee-shirt, and membership/registration in US Club Soccer.
Grasshoppies introduces children aged 3-4 to organized team sports. The program focuses on teaching children basic sport concepts (working together towards a common goal, playing games with simple rules, implementing step-by-step progressions, cooperating with one another, accepting outcomes and consequences, and paying attention) without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Each class uses play-acting and games with built-in restrictions to introduce concepts which become increasingly more challenging as the children show improvement. At these young ages, players don't want to share the ball, so they won't pass. Accordingly, the basic Grasshoppies curriculum concentrates on individual skills such as on moving around the field with a ball, scoring by shooting or passing the ball into a goal, chasing the coach or other players who have the ball, and getting accustomed to bumping into one another.
YOU BRING/WE BRING - Your child may wear any closed-toe shoe. Soccer cleats are not required. Shin guards are recommended but optional at this age. You provide the grasshoppie. We provide the balls, cones, goals, and colored playing vests.
